Drink Freely: To Beat The Heat This Summer

Now that the summers are here, everyone is telling everyone else to drink more fluids to beat the heat. However, the question is what to drink, something that is good for health and also good on the tongue as well. There are many drinks available in the market and many others those can be prepared at home to satiate the thirst. These could be juices, lemon water, coconut water, buttermilk, cold soups, shakes, squashes, concentrates, etc. But the best advise would be to drink more of low calorie drinks and also those which would help to detoxify the system.

During the summer season, due to the heat outside we need more liquids, in order to be able to maintain the core temperature of our bodies. We all know that about 60% of an adult human body is water and that all the cells in our body require water for their proper functioning. About thousands of chemical reactions happen in every cell in a minute and proper hydration is the key for these reactions. In the absence of proper hydration, the cells will not be able to perform these reactions and will die. So, it is important to keep the cells well hydrated proper hydration is the essence of all life.

Water is required for the proper digestion of the food that we eat. During the process of digestion about 2 to 3 litres of fluid along with the enzymes is released in the intestines to assist in the proper enzymatic action. Water is also required to help the body remove the toxins, produced during the various metabolic processes of the body. The body losses water through breathing, sweating, digestion and excretion. If these toxins are not flushed out in time they cause clogging and death of the cells.

Fluids are also required for to maintain healthy skin and hair, loose extra weight and keep you energetic during high temperatures.

During summers the loses of water through sweating increases, this happens in order to maintain the normal body temperature. Along with water body also looses certain minerals such as sodium and potassium. It is therefore, recommended that one drinks appropriate liquids to replenish not only the water lost but also the minerals. These would include:

  • coconut water (rich in potassium)
  • lemon water salted (rich in both sodium and potassium), sugar can also be added to get some energy from the drink
    salted buttermilk (rich in sodium)
  • Fresh Fruit Juices (rich in potassium), simultaneously high in calories. Avoid adding extra sugar.
  • Soups (rich in potassium)
  • Detox water (rich in minerals) without any extra calories, cleanses the body.

Water: Affordable calorie free drink which keeps you hydrated removes the toxin and also It is affordable. It is the best way to quench the thirst and detox the body.
Certain points to be kept in mind:

Drink a minimum of 10 glasses of liquids if you are a female and 12 glasses if you are a male.

Avoid caffeine rich and fizzy bottled drinks as they drain the cell off the much-needed water.

Avoid too much sweetened drinks as they add unnecessary extra calories such as milk shakes, sweetened juices, energy drinks and concentrate.

It is best to take liquids in between the meals and better to sip them rather than gulp in order to quench thirst and proper mineral absorption.
