Boost Immunity With Wonder Fruits- Aloe Vera & Amla

A healthy immune system, we all understand is of great importance. It helps to keep us healthy and keeps the diseases at bay. It helps the body to fight the disease-causing germs and also avoids the development of chronic diseases.

So, in the series of immune boosting foods, today I will be talking about these two wonder foods, that help to keep the immune system strong and healthy- these are Aloe vera and Amla.

Natural products especially medicinal plants, are very much in use today to improve health as not only because are they inexpensive but have fewer side effects.

Today we will discuss two such plant foods which not only improve immunity but are loaded with many other health also.

Aloe vera is a tender and juicy plant which is of great importance in boosting immunity, improving digestive and flushing toxins. The gel or jelly like substance is found insides its leaves. The gel can be consumed on its own or leaves of the plant can also be crushed and taken as juice along with the gel to increase its benefits.

Aloe vera juice is rich in sugars, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and many antioxidants. Aloe vera juice has antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to flush the toxins out of the body and helps in detoxification process, helps to improve the digestive processes and also to maintain a healthy gut. Being a powerhouse of important nutrients, it helps to fight the free radical damage to the body. Aloe vera also protects the liver from toxin damage and promotes liver health Being a rich source of vitamin C it helps the immune system to fight disease causing germs.  Daily consumption of two spoons of aloe vera juice helps to purify blood and also keeps the skin healthy and glowing.

Gooseberry or Amla: It is known as the “superfruit” of India. Amla is the richest known source of vitamin C.  100 gm of Amla can give approximately the same amount of vitamin C as will be given by 20 oranges, which is about 300 mg of vitamin C. Other nutrients found in amla are vitamin A, E, iron and calcium. It is low in sugars and has high amounts of fibre. Amla also has high amounts of polyphenols and flavonoids. Being rich in vitamin C, it boosts the immune system and helps to fight against diseases. It has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The fibre and vitamin C in the amla helps to improve digestion, clear the digestive tract and also helps in the proper absorption of many nutrients, especially iron. Due to the presence of good quantity of soluble fibre in amla, it helps to lower the blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels. Amla also helps to improve metabolism. So, it is good for weight reduction also.

When to Consume Aloe vera and Amla:

  • Early morning consumption of 2 tea spoons of aloe vera juice along with 2 tea spoons of amla juice in lukewarm water on an empty stomach not only boost immunity, but also improve metabolism and help to reduce weight, reduce blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.
  • One spoon of amla juice mixed with two teaspoons of aloe vera juice taken twice daily helps to purify the blood, keep the skin clear, help to reduce hair fall.
  • Amla Powder mixed with two teaspoons of honey provides relief from cough and cold when consumed around three to four times a day.
  • Dry powdered amla can be used with warm water taken before bed helps in curing constipation, as it cats as a laxative. It is also helpful in preventing acidity and stomach ulcers.
  • Amla juice with a pinch of salt and pepper can also aid in curbing your appetite as it keeps you full for longer durations.
  • Amla powder mixed with a tablespoon of honey or jaggery can act as a great natural blood purifier and can increase your haemoglobin when taken regularly.
  • Applying dry amla powder mixed with aloe vera also helps in reducing hair fall.
  • Amla is a proven tonic for hair as it cures dandruff, prevents hair loss, slows down greying of hair, strengthens the hair follicles, and increases blood circulation to the scalp. People often use Amla for shiny and strong hair.
  • One can also apply aloe vera juice on the skin for it soothing and cooling effects and reduce itching especially during summer season.

How You Can Consume Aloe vera and Amla:

One can take aloe vera gel by itself, mix with amla juice for added benefits or even add in fresh juices, smoothies and shakes. Leaves of the plant can also be crushed and taken as juice along with the gel to increase the benefits.

Amla can be taken as juice, in powder form, added to salads or soups, made into jam/jellies, preserve whole amla in sugar syrup or make pickles, curries or chutneys.
